Halloween... The night of ghosts, ghouls, and most things that go bump in the night.

Image
Originally written in 2015 for the Paranormal Team Angels of Light Paranormal Society   It is no surprise that many paranormal investigators love Halloween, or at least this time of year. Many believe that it is the one time of the year that the veil between the dead and the living is at its weakest. Many others believe that its a night of evil rather than good. So, who is right, who is wrong? To better answer this let's look at where the idea of where Halloween came from. The Origins of Halloween In ancient times, Celtic speaking countries many had pagan (Middle English, from late Latin 'paganus' country dweller) roots and belief system that marked the end of the harvest time and the beginning of winter. The festival known at Samhain (pronounced 'sah-win') was the time where they would honor their ancestors, have a great feast, dance, play games, and give offerings from the last of the harvests to their goddesses and gods. They would hollow out turnips, pumpkins ...

Nyctophobia: A Paranormal Investigator's Worst Nightmare

Image
(I wrote this post originally for the team Angles of Light Paranormal Society in 2015) Nyctophobia is a fear of extreme darkness or extreme fear of the dark. Normally this is a fear that one may find associated with a child. The child grows up and the fear disappears. Not in my case. It followed me into my adulthood.  My name is Jennifer Furgerson and I have Nyctophobia. Symptoms of Nyctophobia"If you have a phobia of the dark, you are likely to become nervous in any darkened environment. You may sleep with a nightlight. You might be reluctant to go out at night. You will likely experience an increased heart rate, sweat, shake and even feel ill when forced to spend time in the dark. If your nyctophobia is severe, you may attempt to run away from dark rooms and avoid being outside at night. You might become angry or defensive if anyone tries to encourage you to spend time in the dark." I am uncertain of when my fear actually started. Most fears are created from an event or an ...

Symbols: behind their meanings

Image
I originally wrote this for a team called Angels of Light Paranormal Society.  I wrote this back in 2016. In the paranormal world we deal with symbols painted on buildings, tattooed on people, and just showing up where we least expect them. How do we decide their meaning, or even what they are? We research. A lot of people who see pentagrams, or upside down crosses tend to immediately think that these symbols are evil. No second thought of why they are there, no second thought of other possible meanings. Lets see if I can shed some light on three misunderstood symbols. The Pentacle Lets start with the Pentacle. Most commonly known as a star placed in an upright or inverted position. Some people see it as just a star and nothing more. Others see it as a very positive symbol, yet even a larger majority see it as one hundred percent evil. Where did this negativity come from? Lets start with the history or the closest time in history of when the Pentacle was first used. Its fir...

Was that the past??...a paranormal experience

Image
I originally wrote this for a team I was apart of called Angels of Light Paranormal Society.   I wrote it in collaboration with a former teammate in 2017. Photo courtesy of the USS Hornet Web Page A year ago fellow teammate Scott Wolf and I (Jennifer Furgerson) experienced a phenomena neither one of us could fully explain away. Each year our team, or sometimes only a few team mates attend the paranormal conference Grey Ghost in Alameda aboard the USS Hornet aircraft carrier. The conference is your typical meet and greet, along with speakers from TV shows and other paranormal areas and then an investigation later that evening of all areas of the ship. Many have had their share of paranormal experiences ranging from having their hair messed with, being poked, and even seeing full body apparitions. After a long night of roaming the ship, we go to the bunks/cots/bedding we have been assigned to. The area we were in was on the second deck aft(rear) and port(left) side of the ship. ...

You say Witch like its a bad thing.....

Image
I have never hid the fact that I practice witchcraft, call myself a witch, or live my life in the beliefs of Pagan roots. It amazes me that people still have this bitter taste in their mouths when the word "witch" is spoken. Let's go down the list of the top ten reasons people think of "witch" or calling someone a "witch" is a bad thing... (this is my personal order, my own personal beliefs, and research) Number 10 ~  The Salem Witch Trials Mass hysteria inserted itself into a very God fearing town of New Salem. What started as perhaps innocent play among the your children, people who feared that the pretense the children presented was from the Devil himself. This placed neighbor against neighbor. The rich seemed to thrive where the poor and the meek quickly became victims. This mass hysteria started in the year 1692 and it continued for almost a whole year. Most of the children that claimed to be inflicted sent many to the gallows. Were these people ...

Herbs: a simple guide (Lavender)

Image
Herbs are not just for cooking with. In fact many are used in aroma therapy and cleansing of homes. I am going to break down some herbs and how to use them in your everyday life. Where shall I begin???? How about defining what an herb is. According to Dictionary.com an herb is defined by 1. a flowering plant whose stem above ground does not become woody 2. such a plant when valued for its medicinal properties, flavor, or scent Lets start with Lavender. I know most of you are saying, "that's not an herb", but the second definition says that it is. Most use lavender for the pleasing smell it gives. It is a calming affect that we feel when we breath in the smell of lavender. The uses of lavender seem to be endless, or at least to ones imagination. Lavender uses: cooking, aroma therapy, medicinal. For cooking it is commonly used in cookies, ice cream, butter, lemon-aide. For uses in aroma therapy there are essential oils for burning, heated...
